What is an emotion?

5 Big emotions are in our life - Joy, sadness, anger, fear and calm.

Emotion comes from the Latin emotio, meaning movement or impulse. Emotions are affective states, subjective reactions to the environment that "move" us from within.

Emotions are variable, they can appear suddenly and have different degrees of intensity. They are more intense, but less lasting than feelings.

There are many types of emotions. Some we call basic, and others are more elaborate and complex. I focus on 4 basic emotions: joy, sadness, anger and fear, with the addition of a detractor: calmness.

We place calmness at an intermediate point between the rest of the emotions mentioned, since it helps us to stabilise the mind and emotions, reducing their intensity. Calmness fulfils the function of being the emotional regulator.

The intensity of the other four emotions is fluctuating. As we move away from calmness, one of the other four emotions dominates. The question will be to recognise which emotion dominates, and conversely, as the intensity of the emotions decreases, we will approach a calmer and more balanced state.

The first thing is to know what is happening to you, what you are feeling.

Art is the bridge between the visible and the invisible.
